Many students across different education levels often wonder how to improve their achievements. You might be an elementary or middle school student aiming for national or international accomplishments, but unsure where to begin. Or you might be a high school student preparing certificates for university applications, but still confused about which competitions to join. Additionally, university students who hope to secure scholarships like LPDP may also struggle to find activities that can strengthen their portfolios. Because of these challenges, Model United Nations (MUN) has become one of the most recommended programs for students at any level.
What Is MUN?
Model United Nations (MUN) is known as a simulation of a United Nations meeting in which participants discuss global issues and propose possible solutions. Awards in MUN are typically divided into four categories:
- Best Delegate
- Outstanding Delegate
Honorable Mention - Verbal Commendation
In addition, several MUN conferences also provide certificates that have been curated by the Pusat Prestasi Nasional (Puspresnas). One of the conferences offering Puspresnas-certified documents is Global Millennial MUN. Therefore, even if an award is not won, students can still receive a valuable certificate for university and scholarship applications.
Common MUN Terms You Should Know
Council
MUN can be imagined as an organization, and councils function as its internal divisions. Common councils include:
- UNSC (Global security and peace)
- UNGA (Broad and general international topics)
- UNHRC (Human rights issues)
- WHO (Global health and disease response)
- UNEP (Environment and climate issues)
- UNESCO (Education, culture, and science)
- ECOSOC (Economic and social cooperation)
- UNHCR (Refugee issues and humanitarian protection)
- DISEC (Disarmament and international security)
- UNCSW (Gender equality and women’s empowerment)
- ICJ (International court simulation)
- Crisis Committee (Fast-paced issues with frequent updates)
Delegates
Delegates are the participants in MUN. Each delegate represents one country and is expected to express viewpoints based on that country’s national interest rather than personal opinions.
Chair
The Chair leads the session. They are responsible for evaluating delegates, enforcing rules, giving speaking time, and maintaining the flow of discussion.
Placard
A placard works like a nameplate and displays the country represented by the delegate. It is raised when delegates wish to speak, propose motions, or participate in voting.
Position Paper
This document can be compared to an assignment submitted before class begins. It presents a country’s official stance on the issue and outlines initial solutions. As a result, delegates enter the conference with a clear direction.
Working Paper & Draft Resolution
During the conference, two important documents were created:
- Working Paper
It explains the main ideas and solutions discussed. There is no strict format, so delegates are free to develop their content creatively. - Draft Resolution
This document represents the final, structured version of the Working Paper. It is formatted according to UN-style guidelines and later debated and voted on.
How Can You Join MUN?
Now that the basics of MUN are clear, the next question is how to join one.
Information about MUN is widely available on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and various educational websites. However, for beginners, choosing the right conference is essential. That’s why Global Millennial Model United Nations (GM MUN) is often recommended as a beginner-friendly option.
