Why Is an MUN Certificate Useful for Students?

Joining a Model United Nations conference can be an exciting experience. You get to represent a country, discuss global issues, give speeches, negotiate with other delegates, and maybe even bring home an award. But after the conference is over and you receive your certificate, you might start wondering: “Okay, so what can I actually use this certificate for?”

An MUN certificate can be useful as part of your student portfolio and extracurricular record. But just like any other certificate, its value depends on how you use it and what you actually did during the MUN.

Is an MUN Certificate Actually Useful?

Yes, an MUN certificate can be useful, especially when you’re building a record of your academic and extracurricular activities.

A certificate shows that you participated in a particular MUN conference or program. However, the certificate itself doesn’t automatically make a university, scholarship, or school application stronger. What matters is the experience behind it. For example, being able to explain that you represented a country in a specific council, researched a global issue, wrote a position paper, delivered speeches, or worked with other delegates gives much more context than simply saying, “I have an MUN certificate.”

So, think of your certificate as proof of participation, while your experience shows what you actually gained from MUN.

1. Add It to Your Student Portfolio

One of the simplest ways to use an MUN certificate is by including it in your student portfolio.

If you’re collecting your achievements and extracurricular experiences, you can list the MUN conference along with other activities you’ve participated in. But don’t stop at the certificate.

You can also include details such as:

  • The MUN conference you joined
  • Your committee or council
  • The country you represented
  • The topic or issue you discussed
  • Your position paper
  • Your role or responsibilities
  • Awards you received

For example, if you received Best Delegate, Best Position Paper, or Outstanding Delegate, make sure you document the award separately as an achievement. This gives people looking at your portfolio a better idea of what you actually did during the conference.

2. Keep Track of Your MUN Journey

Your certificates can also become a way to document your MUN journey. Maybe your first MUN was a beginner-friendly conference. You were still learning how to give a speech, follow MUN procedures, and participate in caucuses.

A few months later, you might join another conference with a more challenging council. Then you start becoming more confident with research, position papers, and negotiations. Eventually, you might participate in an international MUN or receive your first award. Looking at all those experiences together tells a much bigger story than one certificate ever could.

That’s why keeping your certificates and other MUN records organized can be helpful, especially if you plan to continue participating in MUN.

3. Support an Education Application

MUN certificates may also be included when you’re preparing an application for a school, university, scholarship, or other educational program, depending on its requirements. Some applications may ask students to provide information about their extracurricular activities or submit supporting documents. In those cases, your MUN participation can be part of your overall profile. However, there’s no guarantee that an MUN certificate will give you an advantage.

Every school, university, scholarship, and program has its own selection criteria. Some may place more emphasis on academic results, while others may look at extracurricular involvement, leadership, community activities, or other experiences. That’s why it’s better to think of your MUN certificate as one part of your overall portfolio, rather than something that guarantees a certain result.

4. Show Consistent Interest in MUN

Participating in MUN once can be a great introduction to the activity. But if you keep coming back, your experiences can show that MUN is something you’re genuinely interested in. For example, your journey might look something like this:

  • First MUN: You learn the basics and gain confidence speaking in front of others.
  • Next MUN: You start taking on more challenging councils and improving your research and arguments.
  • Later: You participate in international conferences, take on different roles, or start receiving awards.

In this case, your certificates aren’t just separate pieces of paper. Together, they document how your experience has developed over time and that progression can be more meaningful than simply having a large collection of certificates.

What Should You Keep Besides Your Certificate?

If you’re serious about building your MUN portfolio, don’t only save the certificate. Keep other materials that show what you worked on during the conference, such as your:

  • Position papers
  • Research notes
  • Awards or commendations
  • Conference photos
  • Committee assignments
  • MUN feedback or evaluations
  • Other relevant documents

These can help you remember what you learned and make it easier to explain your experience later.

For example, instead of simply writing: “Participated in MUN.”

You could explain what you actually did:

“Represented Finland in the UN Women council, researched gender equality issues, prepared a position paper, and participated in formal and informal debates.”

It’s More Than Just a Certificate

The real experience happens during the conference. You research an issue, prepare your arguments, write a position paper, give speeches, listen to different perspectives, negotiate with other delegates, and work together to find possible solutions. Those are the experiences that help you develop skills in public speaking, research, writing, critical thinking, diplomacy, negotiation, and teamwork.

At Globy Private Coaching, students can prepare for different parts of MUN, from position papers and public speaking to diplomacy, writing, and conference strategy.
