For many students, joining a Model United Nations (MUN) conference is already a major milestone. For Maurene Arela Cheryl Suwito from Alta Global School, the experience became even more meaningful.
Maurene became one of the Global Millennium Model United Nations (GM MUN) Scholarship Awardees from more than 1,200 applicants. Receiving the scholarship marked an important achievement. However, Maurene knew that the real challenge would begin once she entered the committee room.
She would compete alongside delegates from diverse backgrounds. She also had to defend her country’s position, negotiate with other delegates, and think quickly during debates.
Representing Sri Lanka in DISEC

Maurene joined the Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC). It is one of the most dynamic committees at the conference. DISEC requires delegates to discuss complex international security issues. At the same time, they must defend the foreign policy of their assigned country.
Maurene represented Sri Lanka. At first, she found it challenging to understand the agenda and develop a strong diplomatic strategy. With guidance from Coach Rakan, she improved her debate substance and refined Sri Lanka’s position. She also learned how to build stronger arguments with relevant evidence.
This preparation helped Maurene present Sri Lanka’s position more effectively throughout the committee sessions.
Preparing for a Fast-Paced Conference
Like many first-time delegates, Maurene had to adapt to the fast pace of an international MUN conference. Committee discussions moved quickly, requiring participants to think critically, negotiate effectively, and respond confidently under pressure. To prepare for these challenges, Coach Rakan worked closely with her on every aspect of the conference. They reviewed her Position Paper, practiced unmoderated caucuses, explored different committee scenarios, and developed strategies for handling unexpected situations. Beyond technical preparation, the mentorship also focused on building confidence and maintaining composure, helping Maurene stay calm and focused even during the most intense debates.
A Rewarding Achievement
Maurene’s preparation and determination paid off during the conference. Competing against more than 45 delegates in DISEC, she earned the Honorable Mention award, an accomplishment that reflected not only her diplomatic performance but also her dedication throughout the preparation process.
Looking back, Maurene considers both receiving the scholarship and winning an award as defining moments in her MUN journey. More importantly, the experience strengthened her confidence, sharpened her diplomatic thinking, and motivated her to continue pursuing future MUN conferences.
